A basic understanding of the workplace is assumed when working with students in secondary schools. Most students have had the opportunity to see lots of different people doing a wide range of jobs. They have an understanding of the way people are involved in employment which has been built up over the lifetime.
Refugee students do not have the same range of experiences and often know very little of Australian work practices and work culture. They have had limited exposure to various career options compared to Australian born students. Their disrupted school experience and limited education has resulted in poor knowledge to make informed decisions about pathways planning.
Journey to Work for your Future is designed to improve City of Latrobe refugee student’s awareness of Australian work practises, encourage refugee student to explore career pathways they may not have considered previously and develop an awareness of occupational roles within varying organisations.
The program supports work experience opportunities identifying local businesses that promote an inclusive culture, various employment prospects and training opportunities for refugee students.
