SBATs Get Young People Working

A school based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) is a great way for a young person who is attending school to engage in relevant workplace learning and training that can lead to positive vocational outcomes.

Finding interested and willing employers to offer these kind of opportunities is one of the major roles of the Workplace Learning Coordinators Program and with around 600 students from local secondary schools currently involved in a range of vocationally oriented training courses , the demand for employer support has never been greater.

Young people currently undertaking accredited training in engineering , building construction and plumbing,  office administration,  animal care, hospitality, hairdressing, beauty care , child care and a myriad of other areas,  are required to gain practical workplace experience and given that an SBAT arrangement can be set up in all of these areas, It’s a great way to go.

An SBAT arrangement is a great option because it benefits both parties.  A young person is able to combine their studies at school with a recognised training program and a one day per week work placement.

It is also an ideal way for an employer to ease into the employment of a full time apprentice or trainee, save on recruiting costs and receive financial incentives from the government which make the arrangement a genuinely viable business consideration.
