School Based Apprenticeships

School Based Apprenticeships (SBA’s) allow students over 15 years of age to work as paid part time trainees or apprentices in business whilst completing their secondary education at school.

The School Based Apprentices participate in a negotiated structured training program delivered in partnership with employers and a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The trainees generally work for one to two days per week, attend training and spend the rest of the week completing their secondary studies at school. Students may be enrolled in Year 10, VCE or VCAL studies.

The SBA program provides employers with the opportunity to:

  • Have the satisfaction of giving a young person a head start in their chosen profession
  • The opportunity to gain a potential long term employee
  • Promote their business and industry as a career for young people
  • Have a training plan suited specifically to their business incorporating training, school and work commitments.
  • Employers are eligible for Government financial incentives when employing School Based Apprentices.

The SBA program provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Gain work experience in their chosen field or industry and get paid for it!
  • Students are able to combine work (paid), learning and training in a specific industry at the same time
  • Most programs provide students with 4 units towards their VCE / VCAL
